When we first decided to homeschool, I firmly believed we would be living in a different, much larger house. I even tailored my house hunting to homes with bonus rooms or an office space so we could have a designated school room.
Well, we all know what happens when we try to tell God our plans. Needless to say, we are still here in our cozy little house, and like many homeschoolers we know, we are good at maximizing minimal space: baskets & tall, narrow shelves are our best friends.
So, here's where we homeschool . . .
Our homeschool area is primarily in our Kitchen/Dining Room. Because I spend the vast majority of the day in the kitchen, it only makes sense for us to do school there. Plus, the kitchen is the site of our one and only table :)
As you will see, though, homeschooling "stuff" doesn't just live in one space, nor does learning occur only at the kitchen table.

Here are the other areas where our homeschool stuff resides . . .
This really tall, narrow shelf from Target houses the majority of our homeschooling materials (minus books). It's the perfect space saver :) |
These $1 containers from the Dollar Tree neatly house all our craft supplies. |
This big tub holds ALL our curriculum. On top are books we're currently using & our mobile art basket. |
We also have Baskets of Books scattered around for easy access for little hands.
Our school-related library books |
Our Read-Aloud basket |
The children's bookshelf |
Mama's books: Homeschooling & otherwise |
Obviously, there is no "right" way to set up your homeschool work area. It all depends on your space, personal goals & priorities, the ages of your children, etc.
But no matter the size, learning can happen anywhere. Right now this space works just right for us.
HAPPY HOMESCHOOLING!

Ooh Keri! I love that bookcase in your bedroom. It looks like the perfect dimensions for my space. Where'd you get it?
ReplyDeleteWe got it at Target years ago. The dimensions are 62.5 x 19 x 15. We love it!
ReplyDeleteWe do the majority of our work at the dining room table, too. I've tried to set a schoolroom up in other parts of the house before, but then I can't get any housework done. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, Nichole, I understand. If I can't be nearby, then for some reason, mischief always seems to ensue :)
DeleteLove how you organize your school supplies! I need to make a trip to dollar tree for some boxes ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Liz. Love the Dollar Tree!!
DeleteI love this! We live in a small house, too so I can relate! Love how you used your space.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Angela. Small houses do have their perks: less to clean, fewer places for kids to hide, etc. but one day I would like a real room for all the stuff :)
DeleteWonderful use of space. You have a lovely home!
ReplyDeletePopping in from the blog hop.
Thank you, Stefanie, and thanks for visiting!
DeleteI adore the look of books in baskets, Keri! And shelves? The taller the better to use all that wasted space up high. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree, Meghan! Every time I make a Good Will run I am on the lookout for nice baskets. And I don't think one can ever have enough tall bookshelves :)
ReplyDeleteI knew I would love this post the moment I saw your dining room; I've got the exact same picture hanging in MY dining room!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice. I'm on a book shelf hunt today so that I can get all of my gear organized!
That's so funny, Gabby!! You just have good taste :)
DeleteGood luck finding a new bookshelf and best wishes on your school year!
Having homeschool stuff in my bedroom would stress me out too! Good call. Baskets and bookshelves (and a library card) are the homeschooler's best tools! Looks like a very efficient use of your space. I like the portable art station in a basket especially. :)
ReplyDeleteI homeschool in a little home as well. I use a lot of the things you do also to help manage & store it all! Have a great homeschooling year! I am visiting from the homemaking party blog hop! I look forward to your visit soon!
ReplyDeleteLooks great!
ReplyDeleteWe've done homeschooling in various places at different stages (I WAS homeschooled; my husband and I plan to homeschool our future children some day, too!). We've worked at the kitchen table in each house we've lived in, but my siblings and I also had desks that we often used, especially as we got older. In high school I did a lot of school work in my bedroom, in a comfy chair or on my bed. I loved that part of homeschooling--the flexibility!
ReplyDeleteIf we had a little more room, then I would definitely get desks. There's just nothing like having your own space. And I think when mine get older, they will want to work in their rooms. Right now, they're still very dependent on me but we're working always on independent learning :)
DeleteLove reading this and LOVE LOVE LOVE all those books all around!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was homeschooling my children, we moved frequently, so sometimes I had space and sometimes not (we were a military family), but I found that my kids usually ended up at the dining room table or living room couch most of the time anyway : )
ReplyDeleteI think you're right. Those are just the most comfortable and practical places to be :)
DeleteWe are kitchen table people, too. Although I would love a somewhat bigger house, I also love that it takes about an hour to clean it top to bottom. Homeschool is the same way. If I had a big homeschool room, I would just want to buy more stuff to fill it. Having a small space ensures I only have the essentials.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, Kelly! Part of me longs for a bigger house, but the other part feels grateful that I only have a small area to clean because I really don't like cleaning house. Plus, I detest clutter, so a small space does ensure that I don't overbuy.
DeleteWe homeschool in a small house too:) We have 6 children and our house has become the school rooom - lol I am so thankful my husband doesn't mind bookshelves, posters, abc banners, art, and calendars decorating our living room, dining room, and kitchen area:)
ReplyDelete"[O]ur house has become the school room" -- I like that! It perfectly describes our situation because just today the kindergartener wanted to do school on my bed. It is a very comfy cozy place, so of course I said yes :)
DeleteI love your cozy house! As a lover of books and reading I love to see all those books around. A library can be a blessing. You have access to all those wonderful books and don't have to store them :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sharon. Cozy is a good word :) We do love our books!
DeletePosts like this are so refreshing! Sometimes seeing pictures of "perfect" situations-- all of those homeschooling rooms that are big and perfect on pinterest, makes it difficult to remember that reality is that most people don't have that space. Even though I bet we all wish we had the extra room, it is good to see school that is in a home (not a home turning into a school).
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Brittney. I have to shut out Pinterest sometimes because it really stirs up discontentment. We're enjoying the space we have and just feeling blessed that we can stay home and learn as a family. Thank you for the encouragement!!
DeleteWe have lived in several small homes while homeschooling, so I understand perfectly. You've done a great job storing and organizing so it doesn't take over your home!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the color on your dining room walls - so bright and cheerful :)
Loved your post! I featured it this week at our Pinterest Party! Thanks for linking up!
