For When We're Discouraged From Doing the Lord's Work


When you undertake the Lord's work, you can expect challenges, setbacks, and disappointment. It's simply a fact that often as soon as the Lord reveals His will for you, someone or something will come along to discourage you. 

Whether that work is a ministry you've started or work with, homeschooling your children, leading a Bible class or study, or rebuilding the temple of God--whatever God has called you to--expect that Satan is going to be on the attack. 

He is looking for ways to undermine the Lord's work, to discourage us so we will throw up our hands in defeat and walk away. He is hurling obstacles at us left and right so we will eventually miss the dodge and simply surrender. 

But I beg you, do not be discouraged.

Remember Jesus' words: 
"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."  
John 16:33

Do you remember how the tribes of Judah and Benjamin returned to Jerusalem after the exile to rebuild God's temple? 
Do you remember all the opposition they faced from enemies who did not want them to succeed? 

"Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building. They hired counselors to frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia." 
Ezra 4:4-5

Satan uses discouragement and frustration to keep us from doing the Lord's work just as he tried to keep Israel from rebuilding the temple. Even within the church this happens. It's sad but so true.

Discouragement stifles motivation. It eats away at our once beautifully laid plans and makes us question what we're doing and if it truly is the Lord's will. All the energy and effort begin to seem like a waste. Yet if what we're doing is truly God's will, then we must persevere.

So what do we do? 

We either quit and Satan wins, or we seek the Lord, recommit ourselves to the task, and get back to work. 

The enemies of Judah and Benjamin worked for many years to frustrate the Lord's work, even lodging complaints to the Persian king, which worked. Temporarily. 

Sometimes God allows His work to be stopped, not because of us necessarily, but for His own purposes. He is in control, and we must trust in Him even when we are discouraged and do not understand His ways. However, like Israel, we need to be vigilant, ready for a door to open so we can set to work again.

In Ezra 5 we read how Zerubbabel and Jeshua resumed work on the temple and how "the prophets of God were with them, helping them" (verse 2):"[T]he eye of their God" was on them, and the builders were encouraged to resume their work. 

Eventually, the temple was finished, and 
"[f]or seven days they celebrated with joy the Feast of Unleavened Bread, because the Lord had filled them with joy by changing the attitude of the king of Assyria, so that he assisted them in the work on the house of God, the God of Israel." 
Ezra 6:22

Discouragement can keep us from doing the Lord's work, but often only because we let it. If God has a plan, He will see it to completion. Trust in that. He is faithful and will never abandon you. 

Whatever is discouraging you today--whether it's putting together your curriculum and plans for a new school year or attempting to minister to others at church, in your community, or in the world, or trying to affect change in a much-needed area in your own life--turn it over to the Lord. Do not be discouraged. He will see you through because He loves you. 

"And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." 
Ephesians 4:17b-19

When Being Discontent is Good


Jennie Allen's book Anything has stirred up some serious internal questions in me recently. I've been grappling for a while with feeling different, not fitting in, feeling like I can't relate to my friends any more. 

At first, I chalked it up to discontent. I'm in a different place than most people I know: choosing to homeschool has distanced me from friends who are sending their kids to local public schools. I don't invite people over for play dates or dinner because our house is small, and we don't have much space or toys or it's too dirty (insert other excuses). My daily prayer has been to be more content with what we have, to count my blessings, to get over my excuses and be hospitable anyway.



In this nation where every earthly blessing we could possibly conceive of is at our fingertips, we are missing out on the one heavenly blessing we most need: 


God


Jennie says it perfectly here: 
When I feel like I deserve to be happy, that my unhappiness from being on a different path from everyone else is unfair, that the blessings everyone else has should be mine too, then I'm telling God, "You aren't enough for me. I need more. I deserve better, even though You gave me life." 

And that's a lie.

Maybe this feeling of discontentment I'm having is a result of God telling me, "Keri, I have different plans for you. I don't want you to be the same. I have another path in mind."

Maybe instead of wallowing in my "I deserve more" pity party, I need to surrender everything to Him who gives above and beyond.

Maybe I need to stop looking down at the "problems" in my life, my idiosyncratic differences, my deficiencies, and look up to see what God has planned for me.

Maybe I need to stop praying for contentment and start asking for courage to continue in my discontent so that I can see what He wants me to do, where He wants me to go, what my new status quo should look like. 

Maybe being different is good after all.

Dreaming & Growing




I've never been much of a dreamer. Until lately. And now my head is swimming with thoughts that I'm afraid, too tired, or uncertain how to put into action. So I'm starting over, calling a "do-over" if you will, because I want to grow, to be fruitful, and productive in this brief life I've been given. For Him. For His glory.

I want to share with you a little about my story: who I am, why I blog here, and what I hope to achieve at Growing in His Glory. You may or may not be interested, but I feel compelled to share nonetheless.


Who I am

My name is Keri, and I'm a 33-year-old stay-at-home mom and part-time freelance writer. I've been married to my best friend, Daniel, for almost 6 years, and we have three precious girls ages 4, 2, & 9 months. 

Like you, I'm busy. Between carting the older two kids to Mother's Day Out twice a week, participating in two different Bible studies, ballet, church, somewhat regular trips to the Y, and all the household demands, I'm rarely idle. When I am sitting still, I love a hot cup of coffee (2 creams + 1 sugar, please) and a good mystery novel. 

But I like to be busy. The one thing I strive for above all else is GROWTH. Maybe that has to do with my height (I'm 5'11) but probably not. I am always working on some aspect of my life and often multiple areas at once. This year my husband and I are training for our first ever 5K race, and I'm already thinking about a half-marathon :)

That leads me to...


Why I Blog

Besides my my desire for community, I feel called by the Lord to encourage, minister to, and motivate other women to grow in their God-given roles through my writing. Hence the name of my blog: "Growing in His Glory." 

In order to become the wife, mother, daughter of God, homemaker, and teacher God has called me to be, I must surrender everything to the Father. That means committing every aspect of my life to glorifying Him.
"Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."

I Corinthians 10:31
 As I grow closer to the Lord, I fall at times. Other times I succeed. Sometimes pride gets the better of me, and the Lord humbles me. All in all, though, I am growing. I want to share with you the ways in which the Lord is growing me in each area of my life.


What I Hope to Achieve

My aim here at Growing in His Glory is to encourage you, the reader, in your own unique walks. I strive to do that through God's Word and my own unique experiences and lessons learned. Along the way, I will share what's working for me and what's not, what I'm reading, great online sources including products I love, and helpful tips I pick up here and there (sometimes from you!).

Whether you're a mom, a grandma, divorced, newlywed, child-less, or overflowing with offspring, I want you to feel welcome to share your struggles and dreams as I share mine with you. We have so much to learn from each other.

We have all been called to a purpose greater than ourselves. Whatever that purpose is, I hope you will come grow with me.
