When God Stirs Our Hearts

Fifty years after its destruction by the Babylonians in 586 B.C., the exiles began rebuilding Solomon's temple. After only 6 years -- in 530 B.C. -- their work stopped. Frustrated and intimidated by opposition all around them, the Jewish people abandoned the temple rebuilding process, and for over 10 years, construction on the Lord's house came to a standstill.

The hearts that God had stirred up to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple only 8 years earlier (Ezra 1:5) had already quieted. The original excitement had turned dull; the passion and zeal for doing the Lord's work was extinguished. It would take the messages of two of God's prophets and the watchful eye of God Himself (Ezra 5:5) to encourage the Jewish people to recommit to their work.

Can you identify with the Jewish exiles? Have you experienced a stirring in your heart that you can only attribute to the Holy Spirit? Did you heed the Lord's calling? If so, have you since abandoned the work He has called you to?

Maybe you were so overcome by frustrations and discouragements that you gave up like the Jewish exiles did. Maybe -- like the exiles -- you began to doubt that what you were doing was truly the Lord's will. Maybe you thought you had misheard Him. Maybe you even considered going back to Babylon.

I admit that I have experienced numerous heart stirrings over the years. Some I have immediately set to work on, and others I've ignored completely. The Lord stirs us up to good works, but He doesn't force us to comply; we have to be willing. We have to be listening to hear what He wants us to do next. And sometimes we need encouragement from other Christians.

In May of 2010, God burdened my heart to start this blog. I really didn't know where He was leading me. My lack of experience in anything led me to simply record my "growth" as a wife, mom, and Christian woman, sprinkling in some encouragement to others along the way. Over the last three years, I've gone in lots of different directions with my writing, but, ultimately, I always come back to writing devotionals because that's what God has really stirred my heart to do.

I'll admit to feeling disheartened just as the Jewish people must have felt when King Artaxerxes ordered them to stop building the temple (Ezra 4:17-24), wondering if maybe God wanted me to stop writing. I've taken many blogging breaks over the years and even contemplated shutting my blog down a few times. Some days I feel like I'm just writing for me or that what I'm saying doesn't matter to anyone else. {It can be discouraging when no one comments.} But now I know not to take it personally. Because it isn't about me; it's about Him.

If God calls us to do something, He will see it to completion -- with or without our help. The temple did get rebuilt (Ezra 6:14). The Lord saw it through. Thanks to prophets like Haggai and Zechariah the people resumed the work. And, once again, He stirred up the people's hearts (Haggai 1:14).

Whatever God has called you to, He will see you through, too.

Is there an area in your life that the Lord is stirring up in you? What's keeping you from obeying His call?

Or, have you abandoned "temple work" due to frustration, discouragement, or fear?

Ask Him for whatever you need, and trust He will provide abundantly.

If I can pray for you in any way, please comment or email me directly. I would love to help however I can.

Why I've Been MIA Lately

Lest you think I've fallen off the planet and am floating in outer space somewhere, I assure you I have not. Rather we are adjusting to a new routine with some brand new activities (i.e. homeschooling & American Heritage Girls) and responsibilities (i.e. leading a new moms group in our CBS Bible study). Each of these are wonderful but time-consuming in their own beautiful ways; however, they do not allow much time for blogging right now.

I will continue my series on "Creating a Library of Good Books for Children" each week, but I can't promise any other posts right now. My social media time is also limited. But I hope you know, sweet reader, that I am thinking of you and praying for you as you grow in God's glory.

I hope you will stick around while I adjust to our new schedule and find a little time to carve out for blogging. Right now, I simply don't have any. You know how that is, right?

Thanks for extending me a little grace.

Praying God's richest blessings on you,

Some of My Favorite Blogs & What Really Makes Them Special

Recently, I posted on my top 5 criteria for the blogs I follow. Today I wanted to share with you some of my favorites. These are the blogs that I read regularly, as in daily. I also read other blogs through Bloglovin' and follow many great blogs on Facebook, but I don't subscribe to all of these blogs via email, my preferred means of following a site.

Some of my favorite blogs boast a very large following while others cater to a smaller audience of devoted fans. Some of these blogs have regular posting schedules while others are a little more erratic. Still, all of these blogs are successful in my book because of the people behind them, their passion and commitment to their blog and its followers.

I hope you find some new favorite blogs from my list.

My Top 5 Criteria for Blogs I Follow {Would I Follow Yours?}

I read a lot of blogs. My email inbox, however, has been so swamped with the latest posts from all these said blogs that I've been going to bed at night with 40+ unread email still sitting there. Waking up to 120 new emails is a pretty depressing way to start the day.

So, in an effort to streamline & simplify my life, I've had to make some careful decisions and cut out those blogs that just aren't working for me anymore.

As I began "unsubscribing," I started to see a pattern to the blogs I'm drawn to and created a sort of mental rubric with specific criteria that really matter to me. Each blog listed below adheres to at least 4 of the 5 criteria.

If you're a blogger, this criteria might be helpful for you, too. Assess how well your blog fits each of my requirements. I may not be the average blog reader, but I am one.

The top criteria I use in selecting blogs to follow include the following:

The blog MUST . . .

1. Help me to grow as a Christian woman, wife, mother, friend

If I'm going to spend time in front of the computer instead of reading a book or countless other worthwhile activities, then I have to read information that's going to help me in my daily walk, not hinder me. I look for blogs that are steeped in God's Word and not some watered-down version of the Gospel. I also follow blogs with practical steps or ideas that I can take away and use at once. I want to grow, so I need to read blogs that speak the truth in love and that encourage, inspire, and help me while at the same time...

2. Challenge me in the areas that I need it

Let's face it; we've all got some growing to do. I've found that light and fluffy blogs may make me feel good, but they don't give me  that wop up the side of the head that I need sometimes. They don't speak to my soul, turn up the heat, and make me question my own commitment.

I need to read blogs that encourage but also challenge me to live a life worthy of my calling. Those blogs aren't always sunshine and roses. Instead, they shine the light on my weak areas and prompt me to get to work!

3. Have a sense of humor & a clear voice

To follow a blog, I have to enjoy what I'm reading. My favorite blogs are written by bloggers with their own unique writing style. It's amazing how well you can know someone you've never even met simply by reading her posts. It's almost like that person is right there in the room with you when you read her posts--like a good friend. A good writer has a clear voice and can make you sense her presence even though she's miles away.

Developing voice is not an easy feat for a writer, so when I find a blog that has a voice that resonates with me, then I usually latch on and never look back!

4.  Have a community feel to them

We all want to feel a part of something. When a blog makes you feel like you're part of the family, you usually stick around. Blogs that have a community feel to them--as if we're part of the same family--entice me. No matter the size, a good blogger can create a sense of community by the way she interacts with her readers, both on her blog and other social media.

I want to know that my comments are valuable enough for the blogger to respond, and if I email a blogger and she never responds, I will probably stop following her.

5. Use proper grammar

This may not be important to you, but as a former writing professor, I value a well-written essay. Call me a snob, but I simply cannot read posts that are poorly written. I look for blogs with a polished, professional style including proper punctuation and capitalization, correct spelling, minimal typos, and complete sentences. Don't get me wrong: I don't expect perfection, but run-on sentences really irk me. I don't think I'm asking too much :)

These are my top 5 criteria I use when deciding which blogs to follow. There are probably half a dozen more factors I could list, but, for me, these criteria determine if a blog stays or goes. Our time is a precious commodity that, once spent, we can never recover. I don't want to regret the time I spend reading blogs, so I'm using this criteria to keep me focused as well as motivate me to improve this blog because I certainly need improvement in all of these areas myself!

In my next post, I will share with you some of my favorite blogs.

What are YOUR criteria for choosing the blogs you subscribe to? What totally turns you off? What makes you sign up?

My Favorite Ways to Follow My Favorite Blogs. . .

Do you know what happens on July 1?

I'm sure you've heard the news already, but Google Reader is going the way of the dinosaur.

What does that mean?

Well, if you're following Growing in His Glory or any other blogs on Google Reader, then you will no longer know when those blogs have new posts--translation: no more updates to your favorite blogs!

So, what should you do if you want to keep in touch with Growing in His Glory & your other favorite blogs?

Here are my recommendations:

1. If you really like a blog, then subscribe via email.

Just by entering your email address in the box provided (see image below for example), you will begin receiving all the new posts from your favorite blogs. That means that every time the blog has a new post, that new post will be sent directly to your inbox.

Then, you can read the latest updates and posts whenever it's most convenient for you. This is my preferred way to subscribe to my favorite blogs. Don't worry; your email will never be used for anything other than sending you the latest posts!

Enter your email address:

Delivered by FeedBurner

2. Follow your favorite blogs on Facebook.

Most blogs--myself included--have Facebook pages where the blogs post their latest posts. Also, on Facebook, you can learn more about and connect with bloggers. I like to post random pictures of my kids, share links to posts I'm liking, and share my struggles in hopes YOU might have a solution (and you guys have some great advice!).

To follow me on Facebook, click here.

3. Subscribe via Bloglovin', Feedly, or other Reader.

There are lots of reader options. I have chosen Bloglovin' for this blog because it seemed more user-friendly to me. To import all your feeds (all those favorite blogs you currently read on Google Reader), you simply create an account. It takes a minute tops to subscribe and then all your favorite blogs will be imported from Google Reader to Bloglovin'. That means, just like on Google Reader, you can go to Bloglovin' and read the latest posts any time you want. Plus, there's even a mobile app!

You can also group your favorite blogs by category on Bloglovin' (love that!):

 4. Other ways to follow blogs: Twitter, Pinterest, & Google+

Not every blog has all these social media options, but if you like using Pinterest, then it might behoove you to follow your favorite blogs (or some of their boards). Or if you like Twitter, then follow your favorite blogs there.

You can also follow me on . . .

Twitter

Pinterest

               Google+

You can click on the icons or links above, or "Connect with Me" on the right sidebar at the top of the page.

There are many ways to follow your favorite blogs. These are just my personal favorites.

I hope you will continue to follow Growing in His Glory.

Slowing Down: What the Weary Do When They Finally Reach Their Limit

Hour Glass

Life has been hectic lately. I haven't had much time to blog. I've read very little in terms of books. My to-do list never seems to get done, and my email inbox is maxed out.

I feel like I'm always rushing from one thing to another, and in the process, my kids are getting the worst of me. We're always late somewhere, and I'm usually yelling at someone for causing our tardiness.

Our oldest, Kate, has already commented several times lately that she doesn't want to do ballet or play any sports this fall because she is tired and wants to stay home. When the always-on-the-go child says that, you know everyone needs a break.

For those reasons (and more), I want to slow down. I am looking forward to the summer when we have no commitments, no pressures on us to be on time and fully clothed, no practices or anything we have to do. I'm anticipating time to unwind, play in the kiddie pool, stay home, and slow down. And I'm thinking about plans for the fall and ways we can continue the slow, stay-at-home approach even then (unless we need a shift back the other way).

In the meantime, I'm trying to prioritize better right now, find a more equitable balance, and relax a little more with my husband and kids. If I'm not blogging a lot, then you know I don't have anything worthy to report. Instead, I'm baking, reading, planning, or playing.

Bear with me during this season. The Lord is good. I am only following His lead.

I hope you will take time today to "taste and see that Lord is good..." (Psalm 34:8).

Blessings to you,

Dreaming & Growing

I've never been much of a dreamer. Until lately. And now my head is swimming with thoughts that I'm afraid, too tired, or uncertain how to put into action. So I'm starting over, calling a "do-over" if you will, because I want to grow, to be fruitful, and productive in this brief life I've been given. For Him. For His glory.

I want to share with you a little about my story: who I am, why I blog here, and what I hope to achieve at Growing in His Glory. You may or may not be interested, but I feel compelled to share nonetheless.

Who I am

My name is Keri, and I'm a 33-year-old stay-at-home mom and part-time freelance writer. I've been married to my best friend, Daniel, for almost 6 years, and we have three precious girls ages 4, 2, & 9 months.

Like you, I'm busy. Between carting the older two kids to Mother's Day Out twice a week, participating in two different Bible studies, ballet, church, somewhat regular trips to the Y, and all the household demands, I'm rarely idle. When I am sitting still, I love a hot cup of coffee (2 creams + 1 sugar, please) and a good mystery novel.

But I like to be busy. The one thing I strive for above all else is GROWTH. Maybe that has to do with my height (I'm 5'11) but probably not. I am always working on some aspect of my life and often multiple areas at once. This year my husband and I are training for our first ever 5K race, and I'm already thinking about a half-marathon :)

That leads me to...

Why I Blog

Besides my my desire for community, I feel called by the Lord to encourage, minister to, and motivate other women to grow in their God-given roles through my writing. Hence the name of my blog: "Growing in His Glory."

In order to become the wife, mother, daughter of God, homemaker, and teacher God has called me to be, I must surrender everything to the Father. That means committing every aspect of my life to glorifying Him.
"Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."

I Corinthians 10:31
As I grow closer to the Lord, I fall at times. Other times I succeed. Sometimes pride gets the better of me, and the Lord humbles me. All in all, though, I am growing. I want to share with you the ways in which the Lord is growing me in each area of my life.

What I Hope to Achieve

My aim here at Growing in His Glory is to encourage you, the reader, in your own unique walks. I strive to do that through God's Word and my own unique experiences and lessons learned. Along the way, I will share what's working for me and what's not, what I'm reading, great online sources including products I love, and helpful tips I pick up here and there (sometimes from you!).

Whether you're a mom, a grandma, divorced, newlywed, child-less, or overflowing with offspring, I want you to feel welcome to share your struggles and dreams as I share mine with you. We have so much to learn from each other.

We have all been called to a purpose greater than ourselves. Whatever that purpose is, I hope you will come grow with me.

"Blog at Home Mom: Balancing Blogging & Motherhood" Review & Giveaway

Click here to visit Christin Slade.

How can I do this writing gig and be an intentional mother?

Is it possible to do both well, or will something inevitably suffer as I try to juggle both?

Christin Slade's new e-book "Blog at Home Mom: Balancing Blogging and Motherhood" seeks to answer these questions, pertinent to any mommy blogger. With practical hands-on suggestions, she offers encouragement for moms who may feel guilty trying to pursue their passion as writers.

While Christin specifically writes for the Christian mom and writer, her message is pertinent to any woman striving to achieve her dream in the midst of all the responsibilities she's been called to.
"You cannot blog with integrity if you don't have your priorities in order. Your blogging is your testimony. Without Christ at the center, it lacks power and will therefore lack reach & transformation" (24).
When I heard about Christin's new e-book, I immediately requested a review copy in large part because of my own struggle to find the right balance as a blogger and a mommy.

While there's no magic formula for creating the perfect balance, Christin presents a clear step-by-step guide for creating and achieving your goals as a blogger and a mom.
Balance has always been a struggle for me. I have been through seasons when I stopped writing altogether because I just didn't have time to commit to all that blogging entails. And there have been times when I've abandoned my children to Barney just so I could finish a post.

But as I read Christin's e-book, I felt a sense of excitement that maybe it is possible to be both an intentional mom and a writer: I just need to get organized.

"Blog at Home Mom" offers the tools and resources to help me get my act together by:
  • First, aiming high with big goals for myself as a blogger and a mom;
  • Then, devising a plan that works and is manageable;
  • Organizing my days & prioritizing my tasks;
  • Creating & sticking to a schedule;
  • Making the most of my time; and,
  • Throughout, caring for my marriage & spiritual walk.

Click here to visit Christin Slade.

The 46-page e-book "Blog at Home Mom" is broken down into 8 easy-to-read chapters, including an amazingly useful foreword by Crystal Payne of Money-Saving Mom and 2 pages of resources including a recommended reading list.
"God planted our passions so we could help others and have a sense of delightful satisfaction and fulfillment in pursuing them. Not fulfillment of the flesh; but fulfillment of the soul" (10).
We have been given certain talents from God that we are called to pursue, not for our own glory, but for the glory of our Maker. And when we use our gifts in the right way--in balance--we become better mothers. We find the right balance, and God is glorified.

What I Love About "Blog at Home Mom"

There's so much to say about this e-book, but lest I give away too much, here are a few of my favorite things about "Blog at Home Mom":
  • All the practical tips for setting goals & devising a realistic plan month-by-month
  • All the GREAT tips for increasing blog traffic and improving as a blogger {I'd buy this e-book just for all of Christin's blogging wisdom.}
  • How short & concise Christin's writing is: I was able to read the entire e-book PLUS take 8 pages of notes PLUS write my own goals in under 2 hours
  • The testimonies & useful suggestions from other successful mommy bloggers
  • Christin's heart for the Lord & her constant reminder to pursue God's will
  • How when I finished reading the e-book, I wasn't overwhelmed by all I need to do but actually excited & eager to get to work!
  • The encouragement that I can be a mom & a writer and not have to sacrifice one for the other
If you're a mommy and a blogger, don't miss out on this e-book! I promise you will NOT be disappointed!

Why I Blog...

On my About Me page, you can read a little bit about who I am and why I started this blog. But with all the goals we are setting as a family and myself this new year, I've been thinking a lot about why I blog.

There are many reasons why I continue to write here:
  • As a creative outlet
  • To hone my communication skills
  • To stay in the Word
  • To hold myself accountable for my plans, dreams, & goals
  • To rant, rave, and vent: Writing is cathartic!
But perhaps the main reason why I blog is this:

To Grow

More than anything my desire is to become more Christ like each day, to be self-sacrificing, peaceable, gentle, meek, and humble, to love like Jesus did, to be the very best wife, mother, and child of God that I can be in the short time I'm given here on earth.

But in order to grow in God's glory, I need something more than myself: I need community.

Like many writers, I'm a loner by nature. I like to have a few close friends who I meet up with on occasion, but other than that I have little time or desire for a social life. I simply prefer to be at home.

Still, I not only need community, I crave it. Why?

Because only in community do we truly grow.

As much as I prefer my comfort zone with its cushy pillows and familiar noises and smells, I desire to grow far more.

In her amazing book Everything: What You Give & What You Gain to Become Like Jesus, Mary DeMuth writes:

"Profound growth happens in the context of community" (153).
...we never grow in a vacuum, away from people. We grow when we risk in relationships" (171).

Without community--whether fellow bloggers, a handful of Godly friends, a Bible study group, or a small group at church--we won't grow.

Without community, we have no one to share our struggles with, no one to hold us accountable when we want to give up, no one with whom to practice all the skills we're learning on our own.

Without community, we stagnate. We may do some really great stuff by ourselves, but who benefits from it? Myself? Maybe. But who else? No one.

We need community--friends, family, acquaintances--to throw out a lifeline to us when we're sinking, when we're doing all we can simply to stay afloat.

We need community to share our stories with, to be real with, to connect us to something bigger than ourselves.

We need community to spur us on when we're beat down, run over, and bone tired.

Paul wrote:

"Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing."
1 Thessalonians 5:11

As a Christian, I have a duty to edify other believers. If I want to grow as a follower of Jesus, then I have to participate in community--like it or not.

I don't blog for fame or great fortune; I blog because I desire to grow. And in order to grow God-ward, I need you. I need the love, support, and encouragement of other wives, mothers, and women who are walking the same road, who have been there or are there with me now, and who can cheer me on along the way.

Community

It's why I blog.

What about you? Do you have a community of your own? If so, what does it look like?

If you're looking for an online community where you can grow by being encouraged, uplifted, and cheered on, might I invite you to join me here?

If you would like to have Growing in His Glory delivered to your inbox, click here: Subscribe to Growing in His Glory. Or join me on Google Friend Connect, Facebook, Twitter, & Pinterest.

Blessings to you,
