4 Short Book Reviews for January

twitterature monthly reading link up short reviews

Modern Mrs. Darcy has started a new monthly link-up of Twitter-style short book reviews. I created my own such review of 7 books back in September, which you can find here

My personal goal is to read 150 books this year, but I fear I'm off to a slow start because, well, Anna Karenina is just so durn long.

Here's a look at what I'm reading & my reviews thus far:

Only half-way through

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Set in pre-Communist Russia, this classic centers on a woman at the height of society whose search for significance results in her tragic fall

Finished!

Everything: What You Give & What You Gain to Become Like Jesus by Mary DeMuth

Want to grow? It's a paradox, but the only way to have everything is to give up EVERYTHING to Christ. Personal, practical, life-changing.

2/3 finished

Your People Shall Be My People by Don Finto

Finto calls out Christians for thinking they've replaced the Jews as God's chosen people. Bold & thought-provoking, this book will challenge you.

Just started

The 10 Commandments of Parenting: The Do's & Don'ts for Raising Great Kids by Ed Young

A Christian guide to parenting from a male perspective. To the point, dry, & a tad formulaic, but insightful. I'll keep you posted as I read more.

If you are interested in what I'm hoping to read this year, check out my tentative reading list for 2013. You can also find me on Goodreads where I hope you'll add me as a friend.

Your turn. What are YOU reading?

  1. Keri, I've been wanting to re-read Anna Karenina--it's on my mind with all the movie buzz! I haven't read Mary DeMuth's book but have heard so much about it, and the other two are brand-new to me. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Anne, I must say I'm loving Anna Karenina because I'm learning so much about Russian society in the 19th century. Amazing book and I can't wait to see the movie.

  3. I'm getting ready to slog through Anna Karenina. I started it with a bad translation from the library, so now I'm waiting on my mom's copy of the better translation to arrive in the mail. Are you participating in Quirky Bookworm's Classical Catch Up Challenge?

    1. Oh, Kelly, I love Anna Karenina! It's beautiful! Just be sure to bookmark your character list because all the Russian names were really confusing!

Yes, I am doing the challenge (or at least I am attempting it :). Are you?

  5. I've requested three books from different publishers as a part of their post-a-review-on-your-blog-get-a-free-book program. There isn't any time limit usually, unless it's a blog tour, but I like to get them read and reviewed as quickly as possible. I'm a little nervous about getting these three done quickly. Last night I was reading Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking while cooking and nearly burned supper!

    1. I love getting free books to read. It's so fun! But I really dislike writing the reviews. I never can get succinct enough.

Quiet is on my to-read list for this year. I'm excited that you found it so gripping! Glad you didn't ruin dinner :)

    1. Thanks, Lesley. I agree! I love finding out what people are reading. I just wish I didn't have a house to clean so I could read all day. Glad you stopped by.

    1. Oh, it is, Sarah. But I realize why I haven't read so many of the classics; I like to read something fast, and AK is NOT a quick read.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  8. I read Anna Karenina many years ago and I remember liking it. Good luck on your 150 books goal. Right now I'm reading Four Queens: The Provencal Sisters Who Ruled Europe: Nancy Goldstone.
I found you through the Cozy Book Blog Hop http://georgielee.blogspto.com

  9. What a great idea! I'm visiting from Mandi's...and since I hope to read at least 120 to 150 books this year, I like the idea of short reviews to keep up with everything.

    1. Yes, the Twitter-style (140 characters or less) book reviews simplify reviewing for sure. Glad you stopped by! Best of luck with your reading this year!
