What I'm Reading: April Twitterature

This is only my second attempt at Twitterature this year, largely because I didn't read very much in February and early March. But I'm picking up speed in an attempt to meet my Goodreads goal of 50 books.  I hope you enjoy these short, pithy reviews. Maybe they'll give you some ideas of what {not} to read.

What I've Been Reading...

Othello, William Shakespeare

"O, beware...the green-eyed monster!" Iago = Evil personified. Classic Shakespeare, replete with dramatic irony, scandal, and murder. #readthisplay!

Lean In: Women, Work, & the Will to Lead, Sheryl Sandberg

Thought-provoking yet almost conversational feminist treatise by Facebook's COO. #speakup! Geared toward working women/men but pertinent to the SAHM/D. #sitatthetable #mustread

Help Thanks Wow: The Three Essential Prayers, Anne Lamott

Classic Lamott: Crass, witty, but full of wisdom & insight. Love this quote: "3 things I can't change--the past, the truth, & you." #mindexpanding

Death Comes to Pemberley, P.D. James

Love Austen. Did NOT love this book despite James' close adherence to the original Pride & Prejudice. Just say no to sequels & spin-offs. #mystery #not-worthy

 Macbeth, William Shakespeare

Classic tragedy full of relevance today: violence, power, ambition, greed. "Macbeth, stop listening to your wife (& those witches) & be a man!" #lackluster

Those are the books I've read in March & April thus far. For more Twitter-style book reviews, go to Modern Mrs. Darcy.

What are you reading that you LOVE? I seriously need some good fiction!

  1. I didn't like Death at Pemberly either, I didn't even finish it! For fiction I am currently reading Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker. I just started it at the bookstore and couldn't stop thinking about what life would be like if the earth started rotating more slowly around the sun. I just had to go back and buy it! Not a long read either

    1. That sounds intriguing! I'm going to search the library and see if they have it. Thank you for the suggestion!

  2. I agree with you whole-heartedly about Death Comes to Pemberley! I should have put it down instead of wasting time waiting for it to improve. It just wasn't a good read at all. She actually succeeded in making me not care a bit about some of my favorite characters in literature. I was so very disappointed. I really liked the underlying pro-life message in Children of Men (the only other PD James novel I've read) though it was a very rough read and I'm not sure I could handle reading it now that I have children. Death Comes to Pemberley really missed the mark.

    1. You know I really should have put it down too. I have a hard time stopping a book when I have heard good things about it. I keep thinking it will improve, but really I just lost a lot of time :)

Good to know about Children of Men. I don't like violent books. Maybe I will try PD James again later.

      Thanks for your comments!

  3. I loved Othello when I read it several years ago. Of course, I loved Hamlet too. I think I just enjoy tragedy.

    1. Ha! I think I prefer comedies myself although a good juicy murder is right up my alley.

  4. Macbeth is one of my out-from-the-library books right now that I haven't started yet, I'll have to get going on that! And Othello is another Shakespeare play that I think I need to read so that I understand the countless Shakespeare references in everything else I read. :)

  6. "Just say no to sequels and spin-offs." Yep, that's a good rule of thumb!

I just finished Lean In, which I thought was a great conversation. After I read the book, I watched the TED talk, which is worth watching if you haven't yet.

I loved Help, Thanks, Wow. And good for you for reading Shakespeare! The only Shakespeare I come back to regularly is The Merchant of Venice. It's a favorite.
